Public Access Improvement at Ridgefield NWR

Multi-Purpose Building

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Complex is excited to share that a new administrative and multi-purpose building is now underway! Slated for completion in 2022, the Refuge broke ground on the new building in October, 2020. As you enter the Carty Unit of the Refuge, you may be greeted by large trucks hauling dirt and detour signs but don’t let it dissuade you. When coming in the entrance road, you will go right past the old administrative building and circle around to the lower parking lot. From there, follow signs to the bridge. Come enjoy walking the Oaks to Wetlands trail and watch the cranes as they fly overhead. Tis the season! Come back and visit often to see the landscape change before your eyes. We can’t wait to serve you as you enjoy YOUR wildlife refuge. ~Juliette Fernandez, Ridgefield NWRC Project Leader

Key Dates

September, 2020: Construction began

2022: Anticipated opening of the new building

The new administrative and multi-purpose building is part of the refuge’s vision to enhance access and serve our community well into the future. We appreciate your patience during construction and the temporary disturbances it may cause.

Construction Updates

Fencing adjacent to the trail and parking lot define the worksite. Refuge trails remain open during construction.

Early in the project, a lot of dirt is being moved at the construction site to get the site to the desired slope.

Ridgefield NWR is no stranger to heavy equipment in the last year, like that pictured here. Other construction projects improving public access and habitat, like the River S Bridge and Main Avenue, are now complete.

One function of the multi-purpose building is to replace the existing Refuge administrative office, pictured here.
